Theatre Sports

For the very first time in 2010, King’s College is offering students the opportunity  to join the College Theatre Sports Programme. Many of you will be familiar with the UKTV Show “Whose Line Is it Anyway?” where players act out a series of games using improvisation - in games such as “Guess whose party?”, “Sound Effects” and the made-up musical favourite “Hoe-Down”.

Theatre Sports is the live-theatre version of this.

The focus of each Monday's session is to help players develop skills such as story-telling, characterization and teamwork. Students will spend each session improvising scenes, songs and poems and competing for points.

The College is also however, enrolled in the Auckland-wide TheatreSports Youth Programme where opportunity is given to both juniors and seniors to compete against other schools at local and regional evening competitions.

If you are interested come along each Monday – starting next Monday the 15th March in the Lecture Theatre at 3.30pm, and join College TheatreSports.

For he or she who dare…improvise!

Theatresports update - May 2010

Recently,  the King’s Theatresports team made up of Jacob Mills, Jay Kim, Kane Lo and Thomas Brash took to the stage in King’s first ever Theatresports Player Night at Lynfield College. They faced off against some good opposition, including a very strong Onehunga College side. The team got off to a hesitant start, with both Jacob and Tom being eliminated early in the first game ‘Story, Story, die’ – a game which requires players to tell a made-up story without pausing.

But the team rallied well. In the next game called ‘Arms’, Jacob and Jay improvised a scene about getting ready for a film shoot. With their arms held behind their back, Tom and Kane, provided the necessary arm actions for Jacob and Jay, who developed a story about a make-up artist and a film actress. Say no more!

The penultimate round, which saw King’s play ‘Slo-Mo Commentary’ was another strong round, with Jacob and Tom providing the sporting commentary for Jay and Kim who had to play out a scene about picking and peeling apples - all in slow motion.

But the highlight of the night had to be the final round, in the game ‘Roller-Coaster’ when the team had to play out an improvised scene involving fans waiting for a famous personality. Tom Brash’s Justin Bieber was outstanding, and Jacob, Kane and Jay as his adoring fans were very funny indeed. King’s finished the evening tied for first with Onehunga College – a deserving result for what was an excellent first outing for the King’s College team.
